If it cannot be understood why anyone would run for public office these days – why I felt, and continue to feel, compelled to run for national public office against all odds, I offer this simple yet sincere explanation. Given the existential threats to democracy existing today, as have existed before and will without our constant vigilance continue, I could and can do no less than to honor those who on June 6, 1944 and all those who never returned from the battlefields of Europe, North Africa, the Pacific and Southeast Asia for their ultimate sacrifice in service to the highest American ideals. Never forget.
